Embracing your dark side

We all have one! Yes everyone! It’s great, easy and comfortable to believe we are only good, only have one side, but it’s not true. It’s lying and hiding from our full authentic messy, dirty, wonderful, amazing selves if we choose to believe otherwise, or choose to hide it from others.

This past Saturday I went on the second of a series of Inspired Adventures on beautiful Bowen Island. The series is being led by a mentor of mine and an inspiration herself that you may have seen mentioned in a previous blog or two. Her name is Kiley and she is the creator and leader of this series and of the Vision Program that I took with her over a year ago.

The first Inspired Adventure was back in Nov 2015 and was all about saying YES to life! I’ve certainly being doing that. Showing up for life no matter what it presents to me is a new and wonderful mantra I’ve been living by (ha, I mis-typed “living” as “loiving” – perhaps a wonderful slip that combines loving and living!). 🙂 So there was no hesitation for me to say YES to Kiley’s second Inspired Adventure – Embracing Your Dark Side.

I love this quote that was shared as part of the work we did:

I am your shadow, your dark lady. I am your protectress. I am your warrioress. I am your deepest power. I am your fragility. I am all that you fear in yourself. I am here to show you the way to your own light. I am part of your light. I love you and am seeking you. I am here to be known by you. What you are seeking is wholeness. You are seeking me.  ~Nandi Hetenyl~

We started out by engaging in an awareness practice. It’s a little difficult to embrace your dark side if you’re not aware of what it looks like inside (and outside) of you. The first question we discussed and contemplated was “What does it mean to have a dark side?” My answer included that it is a part of being balanced and whole but that it wasn’t always easy. Another part that came forth is fear and shame, sometimes feeling both about that part of myself. I think most of us feel both those emotions when it comes to other people truly knowing us, and about truly accepting all of ourselves.

We also discussed and wrote about “What is your current relationship with your dark side?” and also “In what way does your dark side serve you?” For me it included avoidance and impacting the balance of me, and the balance of/in my life.

I’m not going to share the whole program here partly because it’s not my intellectual property and also because I don’t want to make this blog too long. The last part that I’d like to share is the benefits of embracing our dark side. Once we walk through the fear, once we move towards acceptance and also towards love of our dark side, a whole bunch of amazing things manifest in our lives. For example:

1) Freedom! Freedom to be at ease with ourselves in all situations. Freedom to be real.

2) Releasing Fear! When we release fear we blossom, we grow, we become real.

3) Regaining Energy! When you look at your dark side you realize how much energy it takes to keep that side hidden and pushed down, especially from ourselves. When we accept and integrate with our dark sides, when we love it as part of us our energy for other things, for life becomes almost boundless! It requires much less energy to be real.

4) Allowing of other peoples dark side! Like I said at the beginning, we ALL have one. When we’ve accepted and love our own it is easy to allow others to have their’s. To accept theirs without judgement and to love all parts of them.

5) We become real! This if my fave part, my fave benefit. It’s hard work, and often depressing to keep any part of ourselves hidden, especially from ourselves. We may tell ourselves, and it is partly true, that we are hiding for fear others won’t like our whole selves, but mostly we are hiding because we don’t like our whole selves. Somewhere at some point in our lives we were given the idea, directly or indirectly, that part of us, the dark side, was not likable, lovable or wanted. Over time we internalized that and believed it down to our soul. We believed that, from our own view and forgot that it was (most likely) someone else’s view/opinion that started that belief. We decided at some point that it was true even for ourselves. When we embrace our dark side, when we love it, and accept it and look at it without judgement THEN we become real in all our dirty, messy, glorious, beautiful selves!! We become truly free!

Come to the dark side, we have cookies! 😉

*The photo was taken by me. This is one of the spectacular views we had on Saturday as we hiked around Kilarney Lake on Bowen Island. The weather had started out pouring rain but by the time we started hiking it had stopped and the sun poking through the clouds and the mist playing at the edge of the water created this incredible view. I’m coming to love that island the more I visit it and could see myself living there.

2015 in review and my 2016 wishes for you!

2015 has definitely been another year of transformation and growth for me. Before the year is up I’ll be looking back, re-reading blogs, posts on Facebook, and my journal to reflect and review a lot of what I’ve done in this past year. And of course I’m also putting into place the steps for my plans both personal and professional for 2016. I’m excited about both! One aspect as mentioned that is fun to look back at is my activity here on WordPress.

I love knowing that my words here are reaching a lot of people, and hopefully connecting with and inspiring at least some of those readers. I love knowing my blog is being shared by other bloggers to their readers and to friends and strangers alike.

I also love to hear from my readers on how my words have affected them. I read every comment I get and use your feedback to create future blogs and to do things better. I hope you will continue to comment and share with me. We all seek that connection with others.

I would be even more thrilled if you wanted to share your 2016 goals and aspirations with me, especially if they involve health and wellness, but really it’s ALL about wellness – mental, spiritual and physical, isn’t it?

The WordPress.com stats helper monkeys prepared a 2015 annual report for my blog. It’s posted below.

Here’s an excerpt:

A San Francisco cable car holds 60 people. This blog was viewed about 2,800 times in 2015. If it were a cable car, it would take about 47 trips to carry that many people.

Are you ready to make 2016 YOUR year of change? Your year of inspiration? Your year of amazing change?

For 2016 I wish this for all of you:

may the coming year

I’m feeling very inspired lately! I’m meeting so many inspiring entrepreneurs, so many like minded people. I’m learning so much about so many things, it’s all very exciting and as I might have already said, inspiring! 🙂 So today I’m bringing you some inspirational messages. I hope you enjoy reading them, connect with some or all of them and that you feel inspired when you’re done reading them.

Are you going after what you want, asking, stepping forward?

You are alive, it’s a great day!

Plant your seeds, but don’t forget to nourish them.

Say YES to life!

I love the rain, let’s dance in it!

Are you a better you than you were yesterday?

It’s all about the journey.

You are valuable AND valued for who you are right now in this moment, don’t ever forget it or let anyone tell you otherwise!!

When living your truth, when being you, when being inspired, you are therefore inspiring to others. You don’t have to do anything but be you!

Exciting growth!

It’s been a wonderful sunny, perfect fall day here in Vancouver. Spent 2 1/2 hours hiking with my girlfriend in North Van. It was a great afternoon and I was so excited to share some updates with her on where I’m headed.

Now I want to share at least some of it with you my followers. To begin, I’ve been attending some events recently put on by Dream Talks Vancouver and Dream Talks Global. The Vancouver group has just changed it’s name to Karma Talks Vancouver. Here’s a link to their Facebook page: Karma Talks Vancouver. The talks are “a transformational speaking, networking, and social event for conscious entrepreneurs.” These talks and networking events have been so inspirational and I’m meeting so many great people that are out in the world doing heart led work. They’re definitely people I want to hang out with, learn from and hopefully collaborate with some of them!

The next wonderful thing I’d like to share is that at one of those talks I attended I won a “Soul Essence Branding Package” from this lovely woman: Phoenix Rising, whom I feel blessed to have met in person this past Friday. Phoenix and I have had a fairly extensive conversation about who I am and how I (want to) present myself to the world. I’ve also filled out a very thought provoking questionnaire and now I’m just waiting for her to get back to me with logo and other branding ideas. So look out for coming changes and a new, more accurate idea of who I am and what I’m doing in this world.

The third exciting news is at a recent networking event at the Canadian School of Natural Nutrition (I attended there to achieve my R.H.N. designation/training), I met this tech savvy and wonderful woman: Michelle Abraham and then decided to invest in my future by purchasing and then attending a “Kickstart Your Nutrition Business Now” workshop put on by Michelle yesterday. I have learned so much business marketing information from this. I’m so excited to get started on a 90 day plan that was part of the workshop. I’ve got a lot more clarity about what I want to specialize in (more on that soon), how to market myself and my business and how to most effectively use technology (the background stuff), social media and more. Most importantly I got concrete steps and the assurance that I can contact Michelle when I need help with what I’m doing. That means more changes coming, a new specialized program, probably a whole new look to my blog and website, more workshops and seminars from me, but don’t forget this one on Nov 5th! Sign up for it asap as it’s filling up fast and space is limited! Email me at nourishment3@gmail.com to reserve your seat.

That’s it for sharing for now, but I’ll keep you all updated as I have more info ready to release. It’s so much fun to be excited and scared, feeling positive and thrilled about the life and work I’m creating. The people I’m meeting and the inspirational events I’m attending!

“In any given moment we have two options: to step forward into growth or to step back into safety.” (Abraham Hicks)

Step forward my friends and followers, step forward!
